They faced tough matches against Ball State and Drake, but secured a strong victory against Western Illinois, highlighted by impressive individual performances. As they look ahead to the SDSU Jackrabbit Invitational, excitement builds for their promising season.
With the sun shining and a cool breeze rolling through, the UNI women’s golf team kicked off their 2024-25 spring season in style at the stunning Kings Ridge Golf Club in Florida. Taking part in the well-regarded Rust Buster Match Play event hosted by Murray State, the Panthers showcased their skills through a blend of challenges and remarkable moments.
The competition began on a rough note for the Panthers as they squared off against Ball State, resulting in a disappointing 4.5-1.5 scoreline. It was a match filled with tension and tough breaks. The standout player for UNI was undoubtedly Anna Nacos, who chalked up a solid win over Sophie Korthujis, triumphing with a score of 2&1 after registering an impressive 79 (+10) over 17 holes.
Teammate Anna Jensen exhibited her own prowess on the green, managing to tie her match against JJ Gregston while posting the best round for UNI with a solid +2 (74). Meanwhile, Victoria Hualde struggled against Sarah Gallagher, conceding her match 6&5 while completing only 13 holes with a score of +7 (60).
Freshman Isabella Pettersen and fellow Panther Rylie Driskell faced their own hurdles, losing their matches 5&4 and one down, respectively. Meanwhile, McKenna Mallow fought her way through but fell 3&2 after 16 holes, finishing with a score of +6 (71).
As the tournament progressed, UNI faced Drake in the second round, where they battled fiercely but narrowly lost 3.5-2.5. This time around, Anna JensenAmber Henson, finishing with a remarkable 6&5 score and an impressive -2 through 13 holes. Joining her in securing a victory was McKenna Mallow, who earned a 2&1 win over Rylee Heryford.
Unfortunately, Anna NacosIsabella PettersenVictoria Hualde and Rylie Driskell faced steep defeats, finishing five and six down, respectively.
Culminating in a thrilling conclusion, UNI made an impressive comeback, claiming a fantastic 5-1 victory over Western Illinois. The Panthers were back in top form, with Anna Nacos
