Tampa is buzzing with excitement as the LAB Theatre Project showcases Paula Fell’s much-anticipated new play, *Trust Me*. Premiering on March 13 and running until March 30, this production is a must-see for theater enthusiasts and casual audiences alike!
At the heart of *Trust Me* is John Scanlon, a businessman who appears to have it all together but finds himself ensnared in a web of trouble thanks to a demanding loan shark. As financial woes creep in, John’s darker side begins to surface, setting the stage for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and revelations. The play deftly balances humor and tension, promising audiences both laughter and gasps as they follow John on his treacherous journey.
Director Caroline Jett has aptly described *Trust Me* as a dark romantic comedy thriller filled with unexpected twists and engaging characters. This play not only entertains but also raises critical issues surrounding trust, the difference between public image and personal ethics, and the potential fallout of one’s choices. How far is one willing to go to maintain appearances when everything starts to unravel?
The performances in *Trust Me* are captivating, featuring a stellar cast. Rusty Gillespie takes on the challenging role of John Scanlon, while Sidney Gogny portrays his wife Rene, who finds herself caught in the storm of John’s decisions. Adding to the mix is Michael C. McGreevy, who plays Lou Acheron, the menacing hitman whose presence only complicates John’s already precarious situation. Together, they bring an intriguing dynamic to the stage, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats!
Interestingly, the narrative behind *Trust Me* draws inspiration from a real-life event involving a Walmart executive who faced serious legal troubles after embezzling funds. This thought-provoking backdrop contributes to the play’s relevance, making its exploration of ethics and public reputation feel all too real. In today’s world, where financial pressure can lead to drastic decisions, the themes presented resonate strongly with many.
This production marks Paula Fell’s second collaboration with the LAB Theatre Project, following her earlier work, *The Rooster’s Tale*. The challenge of staging new plays shouldn’t be underestimated, as fresh stories often face tough competition from well-established works. However, LAB Theatre, founded in 2015, continues to pave the way for budding playwrights, having successfully produced over 40 original pieces, creating a vibrant atmosphere for theater in Tampa.
After the opening night, audiences were treated to a sold-out talkback session featuring the playwright, director, and producer Owen Robertson. This was a fantastic opportunity for fans to delve deeper into the creative process and the themes explored in the play. For those who can’t attend in person, don’t fret! On-demand performances will be available from March 22 through April 5, allowing more people to experience this thrilling tale.
Live performances are available Thursday through Sunday, with tickets priced at $31. With such an engaging story and talented cast, it’s no wonder these shows are drawing in crowds!
Don’t miss your chance to see *Trust Me* at the LAB Theatre in Tampa. With its mix of laughter, suspense, and compelling characters, it promises to be an unforgettable experience. So grab your friends, family, or that special someone, and get ready for a night of entertainment that will leave you questioning the choices we all make in life’s complicated journey!
