A 15-year-old murder suspect named Jahmir Moore is now back in custody after escaping from a juvenile detention center on Sunday morning. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) is currently investigating how he managed to flee from the secure facility.
Moore was being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice Hillsborough Regional Detention Center following his arrest last week for the murder of 14-year-old Jevario Buie. The tragic incident occurred in April, when Buie’s body was discovered along a set of train tracks in Tampa.
According to the Tampa Police, Moore was last seen in an outdoor area of the detention center. During a headcount at 10:33 a.m., staff realized he was missing. TPD Deputy Chief Ruth Cate stated, “He managed to escape from this secure facility around 10:30 yesterday morning.” Once notified about the escape, local police quickly mobilized various resources including K-9 units, plain-clothed officers, and assistance from the public.
Moore was captured on Sunday evening after authorities discovered him with his parents. However, he was not found at their home, and the exact location remains unknown as part of the ongoing investigation. Despite concerns regarding his escape, authorities noted that Moore’s parents have not been charged with any crimes at this time.
Moore has been moved to a different facility in Pinellas County for safety reasons. Officials have indicated that they will review the situation to determine how he was able to escape and what measures should be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future. Deputy Chief Cate remarked, “We are very concerned. We do not know how a young person in a secure facility was able to escape.” Because of the severity of his charges, it has been suggested that he will likely be tried as an adult.
The family of Jevario Buie expressed their anger and frustration over Moore’s escape. Buie’s grandfather, Michael Baldwin, voiced his concern, stating, “For him to do what he did to my grandson… we’ve got to get this kid off the streets fast, or he’s going to hurt some more people.” He emphasized the fear surrounding Moore’s ability to remain free and potentially pose a danger to others.
The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice is conducting a separate investigation into the escape and will review staff supervision at the detention center. Meanwhile, the TPD continues to look into the homicide of Jevario Buie and seek out any potential individuals who may aid Moore in evading law enforcement.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant. Major Pat Messmer of TPD warned that anyone who assists Moore by harboring him will also face legal consequences. The urgency of the situation underscores the challenges law enforcement faces with juvenile offenders, elevating concerns not only for community safety but also regarding the processes in place for detaining individuals charged with serious crimes.
