Tampa Bay Gears Up for Trees for Troops Event at MacDill Air Force Base

Tampa Bay Prepares for Annual Trees for Troops Event at MacDill Air Force Base

This December, MacDill Air Force Base (AFB) in Tampa Bay will be hosting the much-anticipated Trees for Troops event, delivering free Christmas trees to military families in the area. This event is set to take place on Friday, December 6, coinciding with the base’s MacWonderland Winter Festival.

Who is Involved?

The Trees for Troops program is coordinated by a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting military members and their families. For the past 20 years, Trees for Troops has collected and distributed live Christmas trees to military bases across the United States as a gesture of appreciation for their service during the holiday season. Since its inception, the organization has donated over 309,644 live Christmas trees to military families.

What to Expect

During last year’s event, MacDill AFB successfully distributed 450 trees to military families in the Tampa Bay area. This year, personnel from the base and volunteers are expected to assist with the distribution. Alongside the tree giveaway, attendees can enjoy various winter festivities at the MacWonderland Winter Festival, including the arrival of Santa, performances by the Tinker Youth Choir, and a ceremonial Christmas tree lighting.

Where It’s Happening

The event will take place on the MacDill AFB grounds, making it easily accessible for military personnel and their families. The trees will be available for pickup as part of the festival activities and will also be delivered to families awaiting their trees at home.

When is the Event?

The festival, featuring the tree giveaway, is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on December 6. This timing allows families to gather and celebrate the start of the holiday season together, making it a cherished occasion for the military community.

Why It Matters

The Trees for Troops initiative aims to provide a sense of comfort and joy to military members, particularly those who may be separated from their families during the holiday season due to deployments, which typically last between six and twelve months. The Christmas Spirit Foundation, the parent organization of Trees for Troops, recognizes the emotional toll this separation can take and believes that receiving a live Christmas tree can bring warmth and a sense of togetherness even from afar.

How to Get Involved

Supporters interested in donating trees can do so through Trees for Troops, which collects donations from more than 300 farms across 26 states. Individuals who contribute a tree can include personal messages on tags, adding a special touch for the military families receiving them. This gesture helps convey appreciation and encouragement to service members and their loved ones.

More information about the event, including details about volunteering or donating, is available on the MacDill AFB website or through their Facebook page. This year’s Trees for Troops event promises to be a heartwarming celebration of community and support for our military families.
