Tampa: A Legacy of Teaching and Transformation
Tampa has witnessed significant changes in higher education, thanks in large part to the enduring influence of Marvin Karlins. A long-time business professor at the University of South Florida (USF), Karlins has dedicated over 50 years to teaching, impacting nearly 90,000 students since he started in 1974.
From Folk Music to Academia
The journey began for Karlins in 1959 at the University of Minnesota, where he had an unexpected interaction with a fellow freshman. This student, later known as Bob Dylan, entered Karlins’ folk singing class and sought guidance. Despite not being a standout performer, Dylan’s passion eventually led him to New York, where he crafted his legendary career. “The guy’s a genius,” Karlins reflected, showcasing pride in his former student’s accomplishments.
Adapting to Change at USF
When Karlins joined USF, the campus was vastly different, characterized by undeveloped roads and sandy landscapes. His role quickly evolved, focusing on creating engaging mass lectures for classes of up to 400 students. He likened this challenge to entertaining in a late-night talk show format, emphasizing the need for humor and connection.
A Transition in Focus
Over the decades, the university’s priorities shifted significantly. As USF aimed for higher national rankings, faculty were encouraged to increase research output, momentarily leading Karlins to reassess his role. While he initially doubted the university’s aspirations, he celebrated that USF achieved Association of American Universities status, marking a major milestone in its history.
Perspectives on Students and Education
Karlins has observed a notable transformation in student attitudes over the years. He noted that students today might exhibit a sense of entitlement, a keen observation that he believes reflects broader societal changes. However, he also recognizes that many students are grappling with significant life challenges outside the classroom.
The professor expressed concern over the growing sentiment of anti-education in the U.S., partly attributing it to the actions of educators themselves. Issues surrounding tenure, academic freedom, and how topics like diversity and inclusion are taught have become contentious, especially with state policies impacting higher education content.
New Horizons Beyond Teaching
Karlins’ journey has also led him to pursue a passion for poker, where he has established a new identity in the competitive realm, earning the nickname “the Duckman.” This venture, he claims, acts as a manageable outlet for his love of gambling. His involvement includes teaching poker at USF, where he fosters an appreciation for the game’s lessons on humility and strategy.
A Commitment to Teaching
At 83 years old, Karlins maintains a strong commitment to education, highlighting the energy and potential he sees in young people. He hopes to continue teaching as long as possible, cherishing each opportunity to influence future generations. “Every year that I teach is another opportunity to influence somebody, and maybe in a positive manner,” he stated. Despite the physical limitations that come with age, his passion for learning and engagement with students remains vibrant.
