Sponsor Our ArticlesIn November 2023, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay and the Suncoast merged, becoming one of Florida’s largest after-school providers. This merger allows them to serve approximately 3,000 kids daily across 42 locations in the region. The combined organization aims to improve access to after-school programs, support disconnected youth, and focus on youth wellness while fostering community connections. With a $23 million budget, they plan to enhance services, attract funding, and create career pathways for staff, marking a transformative step for local youth empowerment.
The vibrant city of Tampa Bay is about to witness a remarkable transformation in the world of after-school programs. In a significant move made official in November 2023, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast have officially merged, creating one of Florida’s largest nonprofit after-school providers. This exciting new chapter brings with it a promise of enhanced services and support for children and teens in the region.
This merger is a big deal because it allows the newly formed organization to serve a whopping approximately 3,000 kids and teens daily. With 42 locations spread throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco Counties, this combination means greater access to critical after-school programs that can help shape bright futures.
The operating budget of this newly merged entity stands tall at $23 million, providing a solid financial foundation to support its mission. The leadership behind this merger has recognized the unique challenges facing local youth, particularly the “disconnected youth” aged 16 to 24 who are currently neither in school nor employed. With increased resources and a broader reach, the merged organization aims to address these pressing issues head-on.
The aspiration for this merger has been brewing since 2019, stemming from a Regional Competitiveness Report commissioned by the Tampa Bay Partnership. The report highlighted a concerning talent gap in the region, resulting in the realization that combining forces could be the key to bridging that divide. Interestingly, this was not the first time the two organizations explored a merger, with a previous attempt in 2000 ultimately falling through.
What’s different this time? Well, a lot has changed! The successful merger can be attributed to several key factors: proper timing, a spirit of cooperation, building trust, and having a clear mission—often referred to as the “North Star.” The immediate collaboration kicked off with a joint community event designed to connect at-risk youth with local business opportunities.
After just a few short months of implementing a shared services agreement, daily attendance in Club programs soared by an astounding 19%. Initially, the integration was planned to unfold over five years, focusing on consolidating administrative functions like HR and finance. However, due to the rapid success seen so far, there’s been a remarkable acceleration in those plans. It’s pivoted to enhancing both program availability and quality—talk about hitting the ground running!
Leadership is also keen on creating more career pathways for staff, ensuring that the organization’s growth translates to opportunities for everyone involved. Furthermore, discussions are currently underway to establish a new name and branding for the merged organization, with a reveal anticipated by June 30, 2025. This fresh identity aims to encapsulate the spirit of the unified organization.
In addition to serving those who attend their daily programs, the new nonprofit has reached out to an impressive additional 30,000 youth. They are addressing significant issues like opioid prevention and emotional wellness—factors that play crucial roles in shaping a healthier community.
With the merger, fundraising capabilities stand to benefit significantly thanks to pooled resources, creating more opportunities for donors. National Boys & Girls Club leadership has recognized this merger as a wonderful example of successful regional collaboration, validating the efforts and commitment shown by everyone involved.
At its core, this merger isn’t just about numbers; it’s about fostering a sense of community and belonging. The newly united organization is focused on facilitating better access to programs for all children served, ensuring they feel welcomed and valued.
In essence, Tampa Bay now has a revamped, powerful force for good in its community, committed to nurturing the potential of every young person it encounters.
