St. Augustine Gears Up for 19th Annual Amateur Golf Tournament
Get ready, St. Augustine! The popular St. Augustine Amateur is back and better than ever. Beginning December 6 and running through December 8, this much-anticipated tournament will be held at the stunning St. Johns Golf Club in southern St. Johns County, Florida. Now in its 19th year, this tournament has become a staple for golf lovers in the area and beyond.
Returning with a Bang!
After a two-year break for course renovations, the event made a triumphant return last year, and the energy is electric! Notably, player Brody Stevenson, a former Bartram Trail High School golfer, thrilled the crowd by firing a remarkable final round of 65 on December 3, 2023. His dominant performance helped him soar to an impressive 11-under par, securing a two-stroke victory. This win didn’t just add a title to his resume; it propelled him into the spotlight as he later earned an honor by being named to the Atlantic Sun Conference all-freshman team at Florida Gulf Coast University!
A Course Like No Other
The St. Johns Golf Club has undergone significant changes thanks to the vision of golf course architect Erik Larsen and Director of Golf/General Manager Wes Tucker. The club showcased a brand new layout featuring “traditional throwback” architectural features that charmed players and fans alike. It’s a par-71 course that stretches across 7,009 yards, offering a unique challenge for even the top competitors.
Drumroll, please! The reopening of the course in late November 2022 means that the tournament has shifted to December, away from the typical October slot. This change is strategic—it allows college golfers to participate without clashing with their fall schedules. The later date is expected to pull in a top-notch field of players, including NCAA Division I golfers and talented juniors.
Giving Back to the Community
What’s even more heartwarming about the St. Augustine Amateur is its commitment to the community. The tournament generates net proceeds through various sponsorships, which directly benefit First Tee–North Florida, a local youth development organization. This year’s tournament is projected to raise over $25,000, bringing the total support for First Tee–North Florida close to an astonishing $500,000 since its inception in 2004!
A Melting Pot of Talent
Over the years, 18 past champions have left their mark on this tournament, including future PGA Tour stars like Peter Uihlein, Zach Sucher, and Blayne Barber. There are also several players who’ve made their names known on the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Americas.
What to Expect This Year
As the tournament readies to host an expected maximum of 84 players, excitement is building for both fans and competitors. Golf enthusiasts will not want to miss watching the skill and determination displayed over the three days of competition.
So, circle the dates on your calendar and head over to the St. Johns Golf Club to catch the action. With talented golfers and a rich history, the 19th St. Augustine Amateur promises to be an unforgettable experience!
