After covering the costs of running these prime golfing locales, they still managed to rake in a hefty profit of $14 million as of the end of the fiscal year 2024, which wrapped up on June 30. That’s a nice little chunk of change, and with a record-breaking 420,000 rounds of golf played this year, it’s pretty clear that golfers are loving it!

Torrey Pines Takes the Lead!

When it comes to popularity, it looks like Torrey Pines North is the star of the show! This course saw a whopping 94,000 rounds played alone, leaving golf fans clamoring for more of that lush scenery and perfectly manicured fairways.

These three golf courses are not just a pretty sight; they form an important part of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. The division is home to a hardworking team of 122 employees, all dedicated to keeping the greens in tip-top shape with a budget of $28.4 million. It’s no wonder that the golf division achieved a remarkable profit margin of 35% for the last fiscal year!

Fee Increases on the Horizon

3% for residents and 5% for non-residents. With rising operational costs and a need for funding future upgrades, the increase is expected, yet still a bit hard to swallow for budget-savvy golfers.

No Council Approval Needed!

The good news? This fee adjustment doesn’t need to go through the City Council for a thumbs up since the Parks and Recreation director has the green light on this one! So go on and book those tee times, just remember that your next round might cost a bit more than before!

Improvements Galore!

Fear not, dedicated golfers! The increase in fees is part of a long-term business plan that was laid out back in 2012 with the aim of maintaining and upgrading our beloved municipal courses. At Torrey Pines, exciting changes are already in the works. Early phases of a master plan are underway, focused on replacing the existing clubhouse and maintenance facilities. This will include a brand new golf shop and even a barn that can accommodate 150 golf carts!

And it doesn’t stop there—Balboa Park Golf Course has its eyes set on future enhancements too! One of the plans involves realigning the road that runs parallel to the course. This is all part of a larger safe initiative aimed at ensuring a safer environment for pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists.
