News Summary

After 16 years of closure, the Beacon Hill Golf Course in Leesburg is undergoing a major renovation. Originally opened in 2006 and designed by golf legend Johnny Miller, the revamped 27-hole course will feature an 18-hole layout with stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views. The project, overseen by Resort Development Partners, promises to attract both seasoned golfers and newcomers alike, with plans for a par-3 short course and a new clubhouse. The reopening is set for September, fostering excitement within the community.

Revival of Beacon Hill Golf Course Underway After 16-Year Closure

Exciting news is on the horizon! After a long wait of 16 years, the beloved Beacon Hill Golf Course is getting a major makeover, and work is already in progress. Nestled west of Leesburg, this stunning 27-hole course was originally designed by the World Golf Hall of Fame member Johnny Miller and first opened its doors in 2006. The course has been a significant point of pride for the community, located on a picturesque 326-acre farm that was once owned by famous broadcasting figure Arthur Godfrey.

So, what can we expect from this grand revival? The freshly renovated course will feature an 18-hole layout, which promises to offer breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Golfers can anticipate exciting challenges along with significant elevation changes, about seven miles of winding cart paths, and delightful water features scattered throughout the course. Additionally, plans are in the works for a charming par-3 short course, complete with a practice facility and a clubhouse for all to enjoy.

The Dream Team Behind the Restoration

This ambitious project is spearheaded by Resort Development Partners, a team of experts including renowned architects Tom Clark and Jim Cervone, and experienced golf course builder McDonald & Sons, Inc.. Frank Denniston, the managing partner of RDP, has taken on the crucial role of overseeing the restoration process, which kicked off with the removal of numerous trees that had taken root in the sandy areas of the course.

McDonald & Sons joined the effort in April 2024, focusing on the detailed reconstruction of the outdated golf course. Thanks to the hard work of the Beacon Hill Homeowners Association, the greens and fairways have been maintained beautifully during the years of closure, ensuring that the area remained in good shape for restoration. Their incredible efforts have surpassed even municipal standards, and Denniston has emphasized how vital this maintenance was for the course’s future.

Uncommon Undertaking – A Filming Journey

Reviving a golf course after such a lengthy period is definitely a rare feat, and discussions about the project first emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The community members felt a pull to restore what was once their treasure, and without the diligent care of the HOA, the course might have faced a bleaker fate. The design changes in the new plan aim to make the course more welcoming for those who are just getting into the game. Previous layouts were known to be challenging, mostly catering to accomplished players. Now, with insights from PGA tour professional Michael Brennan, modifications will enhance the layout and performance of the course.

Looking to the Future

As the renovation team works diligently on crafting each hole, excitement is building for a reopening scheduled for September! The new Beacon Hill Golf Club will operate as a private club and is eager to recruit over 300 founding members to kickstart this reimagined golfing experience. Interested golfers can find all the details about membership applications at beaconhillgolfva.com.

Once struggling under the moniker of the Golf Club of Virginia, the course faced financial difficulties that led to its closure. In 2014, the community association acquired the neglected property and attempted various renovation efforts over the years, culminating in this exciting revival project. With the passion and dedication from those involved, it’s safe to say the Beacon Hill Golf Course is on a promising path toward a bright and vibrant future.
