Golf World Remembers Peter Thomson: A Champion’s Legacy

Golf enthusiasts and casual fans alike are reflecting on the incredible life and career of Peter Thomson, the legendary Australian golfer who sadly passed away at the age of 88 on June 20, 2018. Known as a true pioneer of the sport, Thomson was much more than just a five-time British Open champion; he was a legend whose contributions extended far beyond the green.

A Trailblazing Career

Born on August 23, 1929, in Brunswick, Victoria, Thomson showed early promise on the golf course. By the 1950s, he burst onto the international scene, becoming the first Australian golfer to claim the coveted British Open title in a historic victory in 1954. He quickly followed that up with wins in 1955, 1956, 1958, and finally in 1965, securing a remarkable total of five championships. This achievement tied him with renowned golfers John Henry Taylor and James Braid, and placed him just a win behind the great Harry Vardon, who claimed six victories.

Mastery of Links Golf

Thomson was particularly adept at navigating the challenging links-style courses that featured prominent winds and tricky terrain. His unique ability to execute low, running shots made him a formidable competitor when the weather turned nasty. Though he was a powerhouse at the British Open, he also faced fierce competition; he was the runner-up three times, including a near-miss at the iconic St Andrews course just a year after his victory streak.

Remarkable Achievements and Global Reach

Even after his initial successes, Thomson did not rest on his laurels. His commitment to the sport never wavered, and he remained active both as a player and a contributor to the golfing community. In addition to his five British Open titles, he achieved nine victories at the New Zealand Open and three at the Australian Open. While he was less active on the PGA Tour, he did secure a win at the Texas International Open in 1956, marking his only official PGA win.

Thomson’s career didn’t end when he hung up his competitive clubs in 1979. He made a remarkable return to the game by dominating the Senior PGA Tour in 1985, achieving an astonishing nine wins in a single season—a record that reflects his enduring talent and passion for the sport.

Beyond the Greens

Peter Thomson was more than just a player; he was a key figure in the development of the professional golf tour in the Far East, helping to expand the reach of the sport he loved. A respected author, he co-wrote “This Wonderful World of Golf” in 1969 and penned numerous articles that enriched golf journalism. His commitment to the game earned him accolades, including his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988 and an honor as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1980.

Life Beyond Golf

Thomson was born to a signwriter, Arthur, and a dressmaker, Grace, which may explain his artistic approach to the game—always looking for precision and beauty in his plays. He started his golfing journey as a teenager at the Royal Park course and originally worked as a rubber technologist before committing to golf full-time in 1949. His calm demeanor and relaxed approach to the game allowed him to excel while also enjoying life off the course.

Married in 1960 to Mary Kelly, they shared a life filled with family, including their three children. Thomson’s legacy continues to inspire new generations of golfers who aspire to reach similar heights. He may have departed this world physically, but his spirit lives on in every swing of the club, and every round of golf played in his memory. Golf enthusiasts everywhere raise their clubs in salute to this remarkable man and the incredible mark he left on the game.
