Overnight lane changes will occur starting March 24, allowing commuters to utilize the new bridge following the ceremony. The new structure will feature four general-use lanes and express lanes, alongside a pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing safety and accessibility.
Exciting news for commuters in Tampa Bay! The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced that the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand new southbound I-275 bridge is set for March 24 at 10 a.m. This long-awaited project is not just about a shiny new bridge; it will greatly improve travel between Tampa and St. Petersburg and help ease congestion on one of the area’s busiest stretches of road.
So, what’s going to happen? Well, after the ceremony, drivers can expect some changes starting overnight from March 24 to March 25. It’s going to be a bit of a switcheroo as northbound traffic will briefly move to the old southbound bridge. But fear not! Commuters will get to experience the new bridge during their morning drive on March 25. Your coffee-fueled commute just got more interesting!
Why the new bridge, you ask? The current northbound bridge, constructed way back in 1959, is nearing the end of its useful life, and that’s a good reason to replace it. The new bridge will boast four general-use lanes heading from Tampa to St. Petersburg and will also have four express lanes—two in each direction. But that’s not all! A separate pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists will make it safer and easier for everyone to enjoy the waterfront.
This law requires drivers to change lanes when they see vehicles stopped at the side of the road, which includes emergency responders and roadside assistance vehicles. As of last year, this law was expanded to cover all disabled vehicles, leading to an uptick in citations for violations. Make sure to keep this in mind while driving, especially during construction periods or emergencies.
Mark your calendars for March 24; it’s going to be a significant day for the Tampa Bay community. Here’s hoping for a smooth transition to the new southbound bridge and safer roads for everyone!
