New Bridge Construction Nears Completion, Set to Enhance Tampa-St. Petersburg Connectivity by Spring 2025

Tampa, Fla. – New Bridge to Strengthen Connection Between Tampa and St. Petersburg

The Howard Frankland Bridge, a vital link between Tampa and St. Petersburg, is undergoing significant changes as the existing northbound/eastbound section approaches its lifespan’s end. Built in 1959 and now one of the busiest bridges spanning Old Tampa Bay, it requires replacement to accommodate the region’s growing population.

What is Happening

A new bridge is currently under construction alongside the southbound portion of the Howard Frankland, which began work in spring 2020. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced a major achievement this week with the installation of the final “superstructure” beam on the new I-275 bridge. This completion brings the anticipated opening of the new bridge closer, with the current expectation set for spring 2025.

Why is the New Bridge Necessary

The impetus behind the construction is twofold: the old bridge’s nearing the end of its natural lifespan and the ongoing population boom in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. With daily traffic mounting, the importance of upgrading this infrastructure cannot be overstated.

When Will it Open

Initially projected to open in late 2025, advancements in construction have moved timelines up. Now FDOT indicates that the new I-275 bridge will likely see its first traffic sometime in spring 2025.

Where This Project Stands

As of December 6th, the bridge construction is making substantial progress. Upon completion, the new bridge will feature eight lanes designed to improve traffic flow. Additionally, a dedicated pathway for pedestrians and cyclists will be constructed, drawing inspiration from parts of the existing Courtney Campbell Causeway’s pedestrian walkway.

The Future of the Existing Bridges

In terms of the current infrastructure, once traffic has successfully transitioned to the new bridge, the existing northbound/eastbound structure will be dismantled. Meanwhile, the southbound/westbound bridge, currently in use, will be repurposed to accommodate northbound traffic.

What Comes Next

Right now, construction crews are focused on completing the remaining work on the new bridge. FDOT plans to continue updating the community on the project’s progress as it approaches its opening.

Officials are committed to ensuring that the new bridge not only serves to alleviate congestion but also enhances safety for all users, from cars to bicycles and pedestrians. Local residents and commuters can look forward to an improved, modern infrastructure that meets the needs of a flourishing region.

For continued updates and more detailed project information, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.
