Tampa, Fla. – New Bridge to Strengthen Connection Between Tampa and St. Petersburg
The Howard Frankland Bridge, a vital link between Tampa and St. Petersburg, is undergoing significant changes as the existing northbound/eastbound section approaches its lifespan’s end. Built in 1959 and now one of the busiest bridges spanning Old Tampa Bay, it requires replacement to accommodate the region’s growing population.
What is Happening
A new bridge is currently under construction alongside the southbound portion of the Howard Frankland, which began work in spring 2020. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced a major achievement this week with the installation of the final “superstructure” beam on the new I-275 bridge. This completion brings the anticipated opening of the new bridge closer, with the current expectation set for spring 2025.
Why is the New Bridge Necessary
The impetus behind the construction is twofold: the old bridge’s nearing the end of its natural lifespan and the ongoing population boom in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. With daily traffic mounting, the importance of upgrading this infrastructure cannot be overstated.
When Will it Open
