Sponsor Our ArticlesIn an unexpected victory, PGA Professional Joe Ferguson won a local tournament using a set of clubs owned by Bryson DeChambeau. Displaying remarkable skill and adaptability, Ferguson recorded impressive scores, emphasizing the unique experiences of utilizing Bryson’s innovative equipment. His journey highlights not only manual prowess but also valuable lessons in focus and pressure management in competitive golf.
In an exciting twist at a local professional golf tournament, PGA Professional Joe Ferguson decided to shake things up by using actual clubs owned by Bryson DeChambeau, the acclaimed golfer known for his unique approach in the sport. This bold move wasn’t just for personal glory; Ferguson aimed to produce fresh video content for Golf Monthly, all while diving into the intriguing experience of wielding Bryson’s unorthodox equipment.
Bryson DeChambeau, a dominant figure in the golf world in 2024, has always caught the eye of Ferguson, who has marveled at the golfer’s distinctive equipment choices. Eager to see if he could harness some of that Bryson magic, Ferguson constructed a complete bag of clubs tailored to Bryson’s specifications. This included everything from a 5° driver to one-length irons and even an armlock putter that truly captures Bryson’s innovative spirit.
Thanks to Avoda Golf, Ferguson was able to get his hands on a backup set of Bryson’s custom 3D-printed, curved-faced irons – a connection facilitated by equipment expert Tom Bailey. Ferguson’s final setup turned out to be a remarkable blend: Bryson’s driver, three wood heads, a set of Avoda Origin one-length irons, a SIK armlock putter, and specialty wedges to round it all off.
Ferguson paid his entry fee to compete in the Devon PGA Alliance series, held at the beautifully presented Saunton Golf Club. The tournament featured 18 holes packed with skilled competitors, among them two-time British PGA Champion Paul Hendriksen and seasoned ex-DP World Tour player James Ruth. It was going to be an uphill battle.
Though Ferguson felt a bit timid about handling the heavy, thick-gripped clubs, he overcame his nerves right from the start, recording a birdie on his very first hole. The momentum kept building and Ferguson found himself soaring to an impressive 4 under par after making four consecutive birdies! What a way to kick off the tournament! However, he soon encountered challenges as the weight and structure of the clubs (especially the stiff shafts and 123-gram grips) began proving difficult to navigate.
After experiencing a mid-round slump, Ferguson didn’t back down – he fought back and managed to stabilize his performance. Hitting it big again, he reached back to 5 under par at the par-five 12th hole. Yet, the final holes stirred concern; after a bogey on the par-four 14th, was his earlier success slipping away?
Then came the dramatic climax of the tournament. On the 18th hole, Ferguson faced a challenging downhill putt that could potentially secure his victory and allow him to post a low score. With intense mental focus and skillful practice, he sunk the putt, finishing the round at an exhilarating 4 under par and winning by a mere stroke!
Ferguson couldn’t believe the turn of events. Initially, he had only aimed to avoid embarrassment in the tournament. Through this remarkable journey using Bryson’s clubs, Ferguson learned a great deal about adaptability and focus while under pressure. He even developed newfound respect for Bryson’s physical strength and club specifications. Not to mention, the effectiveness of the SIK armlock putter, which he now thinks may very well find a permanent spot in his own golf bag.
In the end, Ferguson’s memorable round showcased not just his skill and strategy but also the fascinating challenge of revisiting the fundamentals of the game through the lens of a different club setup. It’s a tale we’re sure he won’t forget soon, embodying not just competition, but also growth and a vibrant love for the game.
