Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a remarkable display of golfing prowess, Jake Knapp achieved a bogey-free score of 59 during his first round at the Cognizant Classic, making history as the 15th golfer in PGA Tour history to break the 60 barrier. Knapp’s performance included 12 birdies, a record for the tournament. Although he narrowly missed tying the overall lowest score on the Tour, his impressive lead and flawless play captivated fans and set the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
Golf fans were treated to an unforgettable display of talent and skill as Jake Knapp kicked off his first round at the Cognizant Classic with an amazing bogey-free score of 59. This impressive performance not only marks him as the 15th golfer in the history of the PGA Tour to break the *60 barrier*, but he also made history as the very first player to score a 59 at the renowned PGA National.
Knapp’s round was nothing short of extraordinary, starting with a bang as he nailed five consecutive birdies right off the bat. This strong momentum built an electric atmosphere amongst spectators, and Knapp did not disappoint. The 12 birdies he collected throughout his round set a new record for the Cognizant Classic—an achievement that speaks volumes about his consistency and precision.
Knapp’s 59 tied him with the elite list of golfers who have managed to shoot in the sub-60 range on the PGA Tour. The record for the lowest score on the Tour still stands at an astonishing 58, set by Jim Furyk during the 2016 Travelers Championship. As the rounds progressed, it nearly looked like Knapp could challenge this record, especially when he fired a long 60-foot birdie putt on the second hole.
On the 18th hole, however, Knapp had a chance to tie Furyk’s record when he sank an 18-foot, 8-inch eagle putt, but it didn’t make it to the cup, leaving him a stroke away from immortality. Despite that near miss, Knapp’s 59 was still the lowest score of the day, giving him a comfortable four-stroke lead going into the next round.
The weather was a generous partner for the competitors. With favorable conditions and minimal wind, it allowed players to unleash their potential. The average score across the board clocked in at 68.62, marking it as the lowest ever recorded for a tournament round at PGA National.
Other players shone as well, with notable performances from Daniel Berger, who posted an impressive 8-under 63, alongside Billy Horschel and Rickie Fowler. Yet, it was Knapp who left the most remarkable impression on the crowd, known for his focus and determination. Having tied for fourth last year with a total score of 13 under, Knapp clearly came prepared this time.
While Knapp made his mark this week, he also became the sixth player in PGA Tour history to achieve a round of sub-60 without an eagle on his scorecard. This unique accomplishment speaks volumes about his consistency and ability to minimize mistakes on a tough course.
As the second round approaches, Knapp emphasized the importance of staying grounded and focused. His approach to the game is refreshing, and fans can expect more excitement as he continues this tournament. The Cognizant Classic has already proven to be a thrilling event, with the competition heating up as players chase down Knapp’s spectacular lead. Golf enthusiasts will certainly want to keep an eye on this emerging star!
