It seems that across Southwest Florida, the traditional outdoor golf driving ranges are going the way of the dodo, but fear not, golf lovers! A shiny new alternative has hit the scene—indoor golf simulators are on the rise, and they’re here to stay.
Take a trip to Estero, and you’ll find The Cave, a unique blend of a bar, restaurant, and golf haven, located at 9250 Corkscrew Road, Suite 13. This new hotspot opened its doors on February 4, thanks to the creative minds of Karen Nicoletti, a professional golfer with the LPGA, and her husband, Brad Swearingen, a former professional golf caddy. They’ve really taken this trend to heart by offering a laid-back place where both amateur and seasoned golfers can enjoy some good food, drinks, and, of course, exceptional golf simulation experiences.
The pandemic may have disrupted our lives in countless ways, but one industry that saw a significant boom was—believe it or not—golf! Public golf courses are at an all-time high in terms of usage, yet accessibility can be an issue. “It’s tough for the average person to be able to afford the sport,” Nicoletti noted, highlighting that while many love the game, the options for playing are dwindling.
With outdoor ranges disappearing like popcorn at a movie theater, it’s no surprise that simulators, which require a fraction of the space, have become much more appealing. “For under $800, you can put in the real work on an actual course like Pebble Beach,” said Nicoletti. “But at The Cave, the virtual experience is way more affordable.”
At The Cave, you can reserve a simulator for just $50 an hour, making it an inviting option for small groups or even just a solo practice session. The simulators can accommodate up to six players, so it’s perfect for family outings or friendly competitions. Plus, you can munch on their menu that features pizza, wings, and various appetizers while you’re playing!
With a mission to make golf more accessible, Nicoletti and Swearingen have also arranged free women’s golf clinics on Mondays and host special offers for veterans, police, firefighters, emergency medical services, and educators. They want everyone to feel welcome and encouraged to join the game.
After Swearingen faced a back injury that halted his caddying career, The Cave was born—quite literally, built by his own hands. “When he was recovering, he needed a Plan B,” Nicoletti explained. “So, he created The Cave—the ultimate Man Cave for golf lovers.” This labor of love has now turned into a bustling setting for both serious practice and glitzy social gatherings.
Worried about feeling out of place? Throw those feelings out the window! “Coming here, you don’t have to worry about being intimidated,” Nicoletti reassured future visitors. The Cave is designed for golfers of all levels to come together, practice, and enjoy the game. They’ve even got kid-friendly games on their simulators to introduce the little ones to the sport!
Curious about how realistic the experience is? Swearingen gave a demo by sending a shot into the simulator, where the simulated ball traveled just like a real one would—bouncing off the sand and rolling onto the green. “It might take a bit of getting used to since there’s no real horizon, but the realism is undeniable,” he said, grinning ear to ear. “You’ll feel as if you’re right there on the course in no time!”
Indoor golf simulators are a great way to keep the love for the game alive as driving ranges find themselves becoming extinct. If you haven’t yet, grab some friends, head over to The Cave, and experience golf like never before!
