Tampa Faces Hurricane Challenges and Upcoming Bill Hike

The beautiful city of Tampa has been through quite a stormy ride recently, dealing with the aftermath of two significant hurricanes and a tropical storm throughout the 2024 hurricane season. This season has made its mark as one of the deadliest and most destructive in over a century, leaving many residents wondering about their power bills and restoration efforts.

Storm Impacts

Tampa residents held their breath as Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton made their way into the Gulf, alongside Tropical Storm Debby causing havoc just days apart. Hurricane Helene was particularly tough on West Central Florida, bringing massive flooding and overwhelming damage to homes and businesses alike. Just a short time later, Hurricane Milton added insult to injury with downed trees and disruptions to daily life.

To expedite the recovery process, Tampa Electric called in an impressive army of about 9,500 line workers from out-of-state utilities. Thanks to their dedicated efforts, power restoration was nothing short of miraculous – one day for Helene and just seven days for Milton!

Coping with Costs

$464 million in restoration costs from the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC). If the PSC gives the green light, average residential customers can expect their monthly bills to increase by approximately $30.81 for those consuming around 1,000 kilowatt-hours monthly.

The PSC is anticipated to review this cost recovery request in early 2025. In the meantime, Tampa Electric proposes a temporary storm restoration surcharge to take effect in March and last for a whole year. Not the news many were hoping to hear!

Helping Hand for Customers

$1 million to the Share program, which provides utility bill relief for affected customers. It’s heartening to note that this program is funded by shareholder contributions and won’t chip away at customer bills. 30 energy and money-saving programs, making it the leader among Florida’s electric utilities. Since 2021, they have also been proactive in placing 240 miles of power lines underground, increasing reliability when facing severe weather. In fact, about half of Tampa Electric’s 12,000 miles of power lines are now underground, significantly reducing outages during storms.

Customer Concerns

20% over the next three years. Some folks are concerned that Tampa Electric’s costs might be inflated and that the company is too dependent on revenue from its parent company, Emera, causing alarm bells to ring. Sierra Club, have weighed in, pointing out that TECO customers have some of the highest electric bills in the nation, ranking third overall. Furthermore, the Florida public council has warned that additional surcharges could accompany these proposed rate increases, making things even tighter for Tampa families.
