It serves as a counterbalance to China’s growing dominance, making it a focus area for U.S. foreign policy. President Biden, for instance, hosted a notable summit with ASEAN leaders in 2022 and considers the bloc central to his administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
The back-and-forth questioning raised eyebrows and sparked conversations about Hegseth’s preparation for a role that requires navigating intricate international alliances and negotiations. Critics have labeled the moment as a glaring sign of Hegseth’s insufficient knowledge, which questions his ability to lead U.S. defense conversations internationally. Supporters, however, argue that knowing every facet of political blocs like ASEAN is not a strict requirement for a Defense Secretary.
ASEAN is also important for the U.S. as it holds treaty partnerships with members like Thailand and The Philippines. The White House is keen on using these ties as a way to bolster its stance against Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific. Although there are disputes between some ASEAN nations and China, many within the bloc maintain close diplomatic channels with Beijing.
Hegseth faced additional challenges during his confirmation, including scrutiny over personal conduct allegations involving sexual assault, infidelity, and workplace drinking. Given that he would oversee approximately 3 million employees and a staggering budget of $849 billion, his background raises further questions about his readiness to lead.
