Tampa Bay Prepares for Celebrated Performances of Handel’s Messiah This Holiday Season

Tampa Bay Gears Up for Handel’s Messiah This Holiday Season

Tampa Bay is bustling with excitement as local musical groups prepare for the beloved holiday tradition of performing Handel’s Messiah. This renowned oratorio, composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, has become a staple of the Christmas season across the globe, captivating audiences with its powerful “Hallelujah” Chorus.

Who is Performing?

Two prominent choirs in the area, the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and the Tampa Oratorio Singers, are set to showcase their talents in the coming days. The Master Chorale, now in its 45th season, is recognized as the official chorus of The Florida Orchestra and will be under the direction of Matthew Abernathy. He emphasizes the profound connection singing offers between the performer and the audience, stating, “Singing is deeply personal, and deeply human.”

What Can Attendees Expect?

On Saturday at 7 p.m., the Master Chorale invites aspiring vocalists to participate in a special partial sing-along performance of Messiah at the Cathedral of St. Peter in St. Petersburg. At this event, singers can borrow scores, although bringing their own is encouraged. This interactive experience aims to celebrate the sheer joy of choral music and engage the community in a meaningful way.

Additionally, the Master Chorale will present a full performance of Messiah as part of the annual TFO Holiday Pops concert on the following dates: December 20 at the Straz Center, December 21 at the Mahaffey Theater, and December 22 at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Tickets are available for those wishing to experience the majestic performance in a full concert setting.

Where Are the Events Taking Place?

Meanwhile, the Tampa Oratorio Singers, established in 1967, will kick off their holiday season with their own rendition of Messiah on Thursday at the Clearwater Church of the Ascension. Following this, they will host a secular program, Carols of the Season, on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church in Tampa, and later that evening at St. Peter’s Cathedral. They will also revisit Messiah on December 9 and 10 at Palma Ceia, welcoming contributions via free-will offerings.

Why is Messiah Significant?

Handel’s Messiah is more than just a musical performance; it represents a cherished tradition that many associate with the spirit of Christmas. As audiences gather to listen, the emotional resonance of the music often evokes feelings of community and joy, highlighting what the holiday season is truly about.

Both choirs are putting their best foot forward this season, with dedicated directors like Nancy Callahan of the Tampa Oratorio Singers, who brings years of experience and heartfelt commitment to her role. The community is invited to participate in various ways, whether through performance, attendance, or simply through the enjoyment of seasonal music.

Upcoming Collaborative Events

In addition to the traditional performances, an audience sing-along will be a part of Classical Christmas, a collaboration between The Florida Orchestra and the Master Chorale, featuring the Lumina Youth Choirs. This event, set for December 13 at the Straz Center and December 14 at the Mahaffey Theater, will present a different lineup, focusing on English carols and classical winter-themed works.

Get Involved

For those interested in joining the festivities, tickets for all events can be obtained through the respective venues. Whether attending as a spectator or participating as a vocalist, the collective experience of Handel’s Messiah promises to be a highlight of the Tampa Bay holiday season.
