Brush Fire Near Pepperdine University Forces Class Cancellations and Student Evacuations

Brush Fire Rages Near Pepperdine: Classes Canceled and Students Sheltered In-Place

Malibu, California is facing a challenging situation as a wildfire, known as the Franklin Fire, breaks out and spreads rapidly near Pepperdine University. The fire, which kicked off just before 11 p.m. on Monday, initially began at about 10 acres but has blown up to a staggering 2,800 acres within a short time frame. The atmosphere is tense as firefighters grapple with this blaze amid the strong Santa Ana winds that are notorious for their potential to exacerbate fire conditions.

Classes Canceled Amid Evacuations

In light of the fire, Pepperdine University promptly announced the cancellation of classes and finals, urging students to evacuate or remain sheltered in place. Reports indicate that flames could be seen clearly bobbing in the distance from the university’s campus. Ashen skies and smoke swirling through the area add to the urgency; therefore, students were advised to take refuge in designated areas on campus.

Power Outages and the Community’s Response

By late Monday night, utility companies proactively shut off power to tens of thousands in the area to help mitigate the risk of electrical fires due to the fierce winds whipping through Malibu. Firefighting officials reported that at least seven structures have already succumbed to the flames, with another eight suffering damage as of Tuesday evening. A spokesperson for the city mentioned, “It’s certain some number of homes are definitely going to be badly damaged.”

The Evacuation Plan

Authorities have been monitoring the fire’s path closely and issued mandatory evacuation orders for approximately 6,000 people and more than 2,000 structures in the affected areas. Additionally, another 12,500 residents are under evacuation warnings. Officials have shared a real-time map highlighting the perimeter of the Franklin Fire and the evacuation zones on the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s website.

On-Campus Safety Precautions

At Pepperdine, a shelter-in-place protocol was activated but had been lifted shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The university stated, “The fire is not currently threatening the campus, but we are monitoring it closely and (are) in contact with emergency officials.” Videos shared by students reveal smoke and flames dangerously close to some campus buildings. Trees have even been reported ablaze near popular locations like the library, where many students sought shelter.

Firefighting Efforts Underway

As the firefighters battle the often unyielding blaze, helicopters have been seen dipping into nearby lakes at Alumni Park for water drops. The Franklin Fire currently sits at 0% containment, a troubling statistic given its rapid expansion. The brave efforts of firefighting agencies and community volunteers have indeed helped save many homes, even if damage was visible in some instances, including singed decks and battered garages.

Local Schools and Community Support

As the community rallies together, the impact on education is significant; four local schools have announced they will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday due to the ongoing situation. Schools affected include Webster Elementary, Malibu Elementary, Malibu Middle, and Malibu High School. Meanwhile, Pepperdine University students are encouraged to stay safe in their designated shelter locations for the duration of the night, with staff providing necessities such as food, power, and water.

A Light-Hearted Take from a Local Star

Interestingly, while the situation is serious, there was a sprinkle of humor shared on social media. Actor Mark Hamill, who resides in the affected area, jokingly posted about being in lockdown, saying, “I’m not allowed to leave the house, which fits in perfectly with my elderly-recluse lifestyle.”

Looking Ahead

As the Franklin Fire continues to grow, it will be essential for residents and students alike to remain vigilant, stay updated, and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The community of Malibu is resilient and, with the support of firefighting efforts and each other, will navigate this challenging time.
