Tampa Welcomes Recognition for Local Zoo Photograph

TAMPA, Fla. — An emerald tree boa from the Florida Aquarium has made headlines as it graces the cover of the 2024 Association of Zoos and Aquariums Connect Magazine. The captivating photograph was taken by Charlotte “Charly” Quiñones, a dedicated staff member serving as the people operations manager in human resources at the aquarium.

Who Captured the Moment

Charlotte Quiñones, an ardent photography enthusiast, captured the stunning image of the emerald tree boa in a coiled resting position. She expressed her passion: “Photography has always been a deep passion of mine. Working at the Florida Aquarium has provided me with an incredible opportunity to be surrounded by fascinating animals, allowing me to integrate my love for photography into my daily work.”

What Happened

The photograph of the tree boa, which is located in the aquarium’s wetlands of Florida habitat, was selected as the winner from a competitive field of entries. The Florida Aquarium announced the honor, acknowledging Quiñones’ talent and the impact of her work.

Where the Boa Lives

Inside the Florida Aquarium, visitors can find the emerald tree boa, a remarkable species known for its vibrant colors and tranquil demeanor. The boa was photographed during one of Quiñones’ routine walks through the aquarium, where she was inspired by its beauty and decided to document the moment.

When the Recognition Was Official

The recognition came about with the release of the December issue of Connect Magazine, where Quiñones’ photograph graces the cover. More than 260 photographs were submitted in the contest from zoos and aquariums across North America and Canada, demonstrating the widespread talent and commitment within the field.

Why This Matters

Dan Ashe, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, emphasized the importance of photography in conservation efforts. “Through the lens of a camera, we can bring people closer to animals, their habitats, and their conservation stories,” he stated. “Each photo is a call to action, and we could not have been more inspired by this year’s contestants.”

Further Recognition

In addition to Quiñones’ cover photo, the magazine honored 10 other photographers with honorable mentions and highlighted 27 additional images. This recognition not only showcases the talent in wildlife photography but also highlights the significant role that zoos and aquariums play in conservation and education.

The Community Impact

The success of Quiñones serves as an inspiration to aspiring wildlife photographers and advocates of animal conservation. The Florida Aquarium continues to engage the community, promoting awareness of the importance of preserving wildlife and their habitats.

As the holiday season approaches, initiatives like these motivate individuals to support local causes and appreciate the natural world. Quiñones’ achievement is a reminder of the beauty that exists in our surroundings and the necessity of protecting it for future generations.
