Sponsor Our ArticlesA couple playing golf at Stonegate Oaks in Florida experienced an unexpected encounter with a 10-foot alligator. The sighting added a fascinating distraction to their day on the greens. While they recorded the alligator’s leisurely stroll, other golfers remained oblivious to its presence. This incident emphasizes the significance of wildlife awareness, especially during peak alligator activity seasons. Although the experience was harmless, it serves as a reminder to maintain caution around such creatures.
It’s not every day that you’re out on the greens enjoying a sunny day of golf and come across a massive alligator casually strolling around the course. That was precisely the experience for a couple in Florida who were playing at the scenic Stonegate Oaks golf course recently. The vast creature, easily 10 feet long, caught their attention and provided an unexpected yet fascinating distraction during their game.
The sighting was notable – Shirley Schultz and her husband certainly didn’t expect to see an enormous alligator as they enjoyed their round of golf. Many golfers might think of wildlife as birds or squirrels adding to the charm of their golfing experience, but this time, Mother Nature had a bigger surprise in store. The couple was so astonished by the reptile’s size that they pulled out their phones to record a video.
In the footage, the alligator takes leisurely strolls across the grassy expanse, clearly enjoying the sunny Florida weather. It was easy to see why the alligator chose this particular spot to bask—golf courses provide plenty of sunshine, and it seemed just the right place for a giant lizard to soak up the rays. The video captures the alligator taking several confident steps before finally finding a sunny spot to unwind.
Interestingly, it appears that other golfers on the course were blissfully unaware of the colossal animal lounging nearby. This situation raises an eyebrow—would you want to be playing through while a giant alligator is lying just a stone’s throw away? Regardless, it seemed that the reptilian observer had no intention of interrupting anyone’s game; instead, it quietly observed from the sidelines before settling down for its sunbath.
For those who might be wondering about the alligator’s behavior, it’s noteworthy to mention that alligators are ectothermic. In simple terms, this means they rely on external sources of heat to maintain their body temperature. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission informs us that these creatures regulate their temperature by sunbathing or moving to different areas of varying temperatures. That’s likely the reason this alligator felt right at home on a golf course!
While the alligator sighting was a fun and harmless experience for our golfing couple, it’s essential to acknowledge that interactions with alligators can sometimes lead to more dangerous outcomes. Just recently, a woman was unfortunately bitten by an alligator while kayaking in a nearby canal, which serves as a reminder that strikes with these creatures, although rare, can happen. The woman sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a medical facility—the situation escalated quickly!
With about 20 bystanders rushing to help her, emergency responders, including local fire rescue and wildlife experts, were called in as well. This incident emphasizes the need for caution, especially during the peak alligator activity seasons from April to June when these reptiles can show more aggressive behavior due to mating instincts.
As golf enthusiasts relish in the beauty of nature surrounding the fairways, these stories are crucial to encourage awareness of wildlife present in and around golf courses. The aggressive alligator involved in the recent attack might face capture and relocation if it’s found not to have been provoked. Wildlife sanctuaries may be the last home for those whose behavior becomes too threatening.
As you hit the green for your next round of golf, keep an eye out—you never know what amazing sights are waiting just off the fairway. Whether it’s basking alligators or curious critters, Florida’s wildlife adds a unique twist to your golfing adventure!
