Tampa, FL – An officer-involved shooting on November 16, 2024, has led to a significant investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The incident took place at approximately 9:15 PM when deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) conducted a traffic stop on West Hillsborough Avenue near Elliot Drive.
During the traffic stop, Deputy Jared Mincemeyer, who has been with the HCSO since October 2022, encountered the driver of the vehicle. Initial reports indicate that the deputy requested to see the suspect’s hands. While the suspect briefly complied, he reached for a firearm as he exited the car. In a split-second decision for his safety, Deputy Mincemeyer retreated and discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was swiftly transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased shortly upon arrival. This event has raised serious concerns and has brought the deputies involved under scrutiny as the FDLE conducts their investigation.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister released a statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He stated, “Our deputy was simply doing his job trying to protect our community when he was forced to defend himself against an armed individual.” Sheriff Chronister emphasized that deputies face these dangerous situations to keep the public safe and highlighted the risks involved in their line of work.
In an effort to increase transparency, the HCSO has released body camera footage related to the incident. This includes recordings from Deputy Mincemeyer as well as footage from an undercover deputy situated in the vehicle’s front passenger seat during the traffic stop. The footage aims to provide insight into the actions taken by law enforcement and may help clarify the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
The investigation by the FDLE will include a thorough review of the footage, witness statements, and the circumstances leading to the shooting. It is standard procedure for such incidents to be investigated by an external agency to ensure impartiality and accountability in law enforcement actions.
The community in Tampa has expressed a range of reactions following the incident. Some residents have voiced support for the Sheriff’s Office and the dangers faced by deputies daily, while others are calling for a comprehensive review of police procedures in situations involving potential deadly force. Community forums may become a platform for open discussions about police accountability, community safety, and reform.
As of now, Deputy Mincemeyer remains on administrative leave, which is a common practice following officer-involved shootings. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the public informed during the ongoing investigation. This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with law enforcement work and the often fraught nature of traffic stops.
Residents of Tampa are encouraged to stay informed as details continue to unfold regarding this tragic event. The FDLE’s investigation will play a crucial role in determining the circumstances and legality of the actions taken by Deputy Mincemeyer during the traffic stop.
