Florida A&M University (FAMU) football team is thrilled to announce the addition of former Florida State University (FSU) defensive lineman Xavier Perkins. Aiming to enhance their defense after a 7-5 season, Perkins brings impressive stats from high school and anticipates making a significant impact with the Rattlers. With changes in coaching and the transfer portal, the team looks hopeful for the upcoming season, ready to rally behind Perkins and his new teammates.
The sun is shining bright in Tallahassee, Florida, and there’s a buzz in the air as Florida A&M University (FAMU) welcomes its newest addition to the football team: former Florida State University (FSU) defensive lineman Xavier Perkins. This spirited transfer has everyone talking, as Perkins is set to bring some serious talent to the Rattlers’, aiming to spice things up following a decent yet unsatisfactory 7-5 season.
Standing tall at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 237 pounds, Perkins dazzled the high school football scene during his time at Berkeley Prep in Tampa. Known as a fierce edge rusher, this rising redshirt sophomore has made waves with his impressive stats, including 63 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and a dazzling 13 sacks over 30 varsity games! Perkins even had the honor of being invited to big events like the 2023 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl and the Georgia vs. Florida High School Showcase.
While his time at FSU wasn’t as impactful – with just two games played and no recorded stats in the 2024 season – Perkins is ready to take on a new challenge. He’s thrilled to announce his commitment to FAMU on social media, expressing gratitude and excitement for this next chapter of his academic and athletic journey, all while shouting, “Go Rattlers!”
FAMU’s coach, James Colzie III, also an FSU graduate, is zeroing in on revitalizing the Rattlers’ defensive line. Last season, FAMU’s defense struggled against strong offensive plays, particularly with the run game. Perkins is stepping into a squad that ranked No. 2 nationally earlier in the season before facing some turmoil with the departure of defensive coordinator Ryan Smith.
With the new hire, defensive coordinator Milton Patterson, at the helm, Perkins is expected to play a key role in restructuring the defense. Not only are the fans excited to see how Perkins adapts to his new environment, but they also believe that his strong pass-rushing skills are exactly what the Rattlers need to bounce back.
Perkins isn’t the only former Seminole joining the ranks at FAMU. He’ll be joining fellow alumni like wide receiver Goldie Lawrence and offensive lineman Jalen Goss, creating a camaraderie that could be beneficial on and off the field. The drive to excel is palpable, and there’s a sense of excitement amongst teammates and fans alike.
Perkins’ move is part of a larger trend within college football, as many players explore the transfer portal this offseason. With the NCAA implementing new roster size regulations for FBS teams, it’s expected that more athletes will be making moves in search of the best fit for their skills and ambitions. Expressing their hopes for the future, FAMU fans are eagerly anticipating how Perkins’ contributions will impact the upcoming season.
As Perkins settles into his new home and dons the Rattler colors, the anticipation builds for what’s to come. With his fierce determination and undeniable talent, there’s no doubt that he’ll be a player to watch. The road ahead looks promising for FAMU football, and everyone is ready to rally behind their team as they aim for success!
