Vibrant mural of a gopher tortoise and sea turtle on a water tower

News Summary

Tom Stovall, a muralist in Dunedin, had a life-threatening experience when his lift malfunctioned while he painted a mural at the Curlew Water Tower. The Pinellas County Technical Rescue Team quickly intervened, securing him and safely lowering him to the ground. Stovall resumed his project, a vibrant mural honoring local legends Henry Scharrer and Sylvia Earle, showcasing the blend of community spirit and artistic dedication.

Dunedin’s Thrilling Mural Rescue: Artist is Saved After Scary Lift Incident!

Dunedin was buzzing with excitement recently after a dramatic event unfolded at the iconic Curlew Water Tower, where talented muralist Tom Stovall was working on his latest masterpiece. Picture this: Stovall, an experienced artist, was reaching for the skies, literally, as he painted a stunning mural featuring the beloved gopher tortoise Henry and his aquatic friend, sea turtle Sylvia. However, the thrill of creating art took a turn for the unexpected when the lift he was using experienced a motor failure, leaving him hanging a whopping 150 feet above the ground!

A Heroic Team Response

Fear not, as the brave men and women of the Pinellas County Technical Rescue Team quickly sprang into action. This amazing team consisted of members from various fire departments, including St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, Largo Fire Rescue, Pinellas Park Fire Rescue, and Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department. Together, they formulated a rescue plan that showcased their expertise and teamwork.

As they rushed to the scene, their swift and professional handling of the situation was nothing short of impressive. With precise coordination, the team secured Stovall in a safety harness before gently lowering him back to solid ground. Instead of dwelling on the frightening situation, Stovall was filled with admiration for the team’s efficiency, highlighting how well they worked together to ensure a safe outcome.

Back to Business

Once safely back on the ground, Stovall wasted no time! After the lift was repaired, he returned to finish what he started—his vibrant mural, which took around six months to complete. Of course, bad weather did slow down the process on occasion, but nothing could keep this dedicated artist away from his craft for long. With each brush stroke, he brought the characters of Henry and Sylvia to life, contributing to the rich tapestry of art in the community.

Honoring Local Legends

The final mural, titled “Henry and Sylvia,” holds a special significance for Dunedin. It pays tribute to Henry Scharrer, a Swiss immigrant and naturalist who made his home on Caladesi Island way back in 1888. This vibrant piece of artwork also honors renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle, a cherished local figure and a beacon of environmentalism.

A Splash of Color for the Community

But why transform a functional water tower into a canvas, you ask? Well, the city recognized that the aging 1960s water tower was in need of some maintenance. What better way to utilize water and wastewater funds than by turning this old structure into a stunning display of public art? It’s a win-win for everyone involved!

Meet Tom Stovall: An Artist for All Seasons

At the age of 73, Stovall continues to take on new artistic challenges, showcasing his passion for mural painting throughout historic water towers in Pinellas County. His diverse artistic background encompasses acting, directing, and producing for television, film, and stage productions. With classical training in music and dance, Stovall breathes creativity, breathing life into each project he undertakes.

The Dedication Ceremony

Capping off the excitement was a public art dedication ceremony where Dunedin proudly honored Stovall. The vibrant hues of the mural now stand as a lasting testament to the collaboration between art and community spirit. The mural, a magical blend of nature and local history, will undoubtedly inspire young and old alike for years to come!

So, the next time you find yourself in Dunedin, make sure to stop by the Curlew Water Tower to soak in the beauty of “Henry and Sylvia.” This colorful testament to teamwork, art, and local heroes, will remind everyone of the significance of dedication and the artistic expressions that shape the heart of the community.
