In a troubling turn of events on the morning of March 23, 2025, Riverview, Florida, found itself at the center of a domestic violence incident that escalated into a shocking exchange of gunfire involving law enforcement. The situation unfolded shortly after 3:00 a.m., rattling the peaceful suburban community.
At precisely 3:47 a.m., a distressing 911 call rolled in from a woman reporting physical abuse and threats from her ex-husband. The call guided deputies to the chaotic scene at the 10500 block of Lake Montauk Drive. Shortly after their arrival, they found a woman outside the residence, visibly shaken after enduring an assault.
The suspect, identified as Manuel Alvarez, aged 50, reportedly turned violent after the ex-wife’s call for help. Alvarez had allegedly attacked the victim and, in a bewildering attempt to cause more chaos, tried to set the bedroom on fire. Items like a fake plant and various household objects were ignited in what can only be described as a reckless act of aggression.
Upon entering the home, deputies could hear Alvarez’s irate rants inside, which paved the way for a perilous scenario. In a brazen display of hostility, he threatened the deputies, warning them of his intentions while armed with a gun. The nature of this confrontation was tense and perilous, and deputies had to make quick decisions to ensure their safety and that of the victim.
Deputy Shawn Swinford, aged 35, who has been with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since July 2024, found himself faced with an untenable situation. With prior law enforcement experience spanning eight years, he was compelled to discharge his weapon, hitting Alvarez twice in the upper torso. This rapid response underscores the danger officers face when confronting domestic violence incidents.
After the shooting, Alvarez was rushed to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery and remains in critical condition. The stress of the situation continues to resonate throughout Riverview as the community grapples with the implications of such incidents.
As part of standard protocol, Deputy Swinford has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation unfolds. The investigation is being overseen by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, working diligently to gather facts surrounding this alarming event.
Sheriff Chad Chronister has taken this opportunity to highlight the critical importance of seeking help for those who might be experiencing domestic violence. He emphasized various support resources available, including the hotline operated by The Spring of Tampa Bay, which can be contacted at (813)-247-SAFE. It’s a vital reminder for victims to know they are not alone and there is help out there.
This incident marks the second shooting involving domestic violence this week in Hillsborough County, raising alarming awareness in the area about the harsh realities that some families are facing. As the community reflects on the events within their midst, it shines a light on the ongoing issue of domestic abuse that remains ever-present.
As investigations continue, families, friends, and residents of Riverview are left to digest the harrowing circumstances that played out in their neighborhood. Each day is a reminder to stay vigilant and prioritize safety, nurturing an environment where help is accessible and sought after.
