Deputy-Involved Shooting in Tampa Results in Fatality after Disturbance Call

Deputy-Involved Shooting in Tampa Leaves One Dead

TAMPA, FL – A deputy-involved shooting unfolded on December 5, 2024, as Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a neighbor dispute at an apartment complex on Camden Street. The incident began around 9 p.m. when a 911 call reported that a resident had been assaulted by his neighbor.

Identifying the Suspect

The caller was identified as Jason Douglas Paul, 47, who allegedly threatened to kill his neighbor upon the arrival of law enforcement. Deputies found Paul behaving erratically, prompting them to attempt de-escalation tactics. However, he continued to issue threats, leading the officers to decide to initiate a Baker Act, a process that allows for the involuntary examination of individuals who are a danger to themselves or others.

Concerning Developments

After entering his home, Paul refused to exit when requested by deputies. As they attempted to negotiate with him, the deputies observed through a window that he was armed with a knife. Suddenly, the sound of a woman screaming was heard, leading deputies to believe she was in imminent danger.

A Dangerous Situation

Fearing for the woman’s safety, deputies took decisive action, breaking through a window to enter the apartment. Once inside, they moved quickly to the back bedroom where they found Paul holding the knife and the female victim. Deputies commanded Paul to drop the weapon multiple times, but he failed to comply.

The Shooting Incident

In a critical moment of danger, Deputy John Howes, motivated by the urgent need to protect the victim, discharged his firearm. Paul was struck by the gunfire, resulting in severe injuries. Medical assistance was rendered immediately by the deputies until emergency medical services arrived on the scene.

Outcome and Investigation

Paul was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. Sheriff Chad Chronister stated, “Our deputies sprang to action when confronted with a situation where someone’s life was in immediate danger. Our deputies are trained to protect innocent lives, and that’s what they did.”

Deputy Howes, who has been with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since February 2024, is noted to have no prior use of force incidents. Paul had a history of criminal behavior, including charges for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence back in 2005. He also faced a DUI arrest in 1999.

Future Updates

The investigation into this incident is being handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and further updates will come from their office.

The incident has raised numerous questions about the circumstances surrounding deputy-involved shootings and the mental health issues that often contribute to such confrontations. The community is urged to await official findings from the ongoing investigation to gain a clearer understanding of the situation.
