Sponsor Our ArticlesCostco’s new Kirkland Signature irons have stirred controversy in the golfing community following a cease and desist from TaylorMade for patent infringement. Initially popular, the clubs are now criticized over their performance and possible design violations. Testing reveals they may not match the quality of premium options like TaylorMade’s P790. The situation raises questions about the affordability and reliability of these budget golf clubs as legal battles unfold.
In December 2023, Costco made quite the splash in the golfing world by launching its highly anticipated Kirkland Signature irons. Aimed squarely at golfers looking for high-performance gear at a reasonable price, these irons are set to compete with some of the big names out there, particularly TaylorMade’s well-respected P790 irons which have been a favorite since their launch in 2017.
Costco isn’t new to the golf game. With past success items under their belt, including urethane golf balls and CNC milled putters, the company proved they know how to create appealing products for discerning golfers. The Kirkland Signature irons quickly sold out, overwhelming demand showcasing their popularity right out of the gate. However, that success was soon overshadowed by controversy.
Not long after the Kirkland Signature irons took off, TaylorMade stepped in with a Cease and Desist order and a lawsuit, claiming Costco’s newest offering infringes on multiple patents associated with the P790 design and construction. The lawsuit doesn’t stop there; it also alleges false advertising regarding the materials and construction methods used in creating the Kirkland irons. Yikes! Legal battles seem to follow the big players everywhere!
Despite being sold out initially, the Kirkland Signature irons eventually made appearances in Costco outlets primarily in the UK. These irons are targeted towards golfers whose handicaps fall between 5 and 20, striking a chord with both amateur and semi-professional players. The price tag? About £500, which is a steal compared to the £1,200+ for the TaylorMade P790—although there’s a catch! The performance might not quite match up to what’s offered by premium brands like TaylorMade.
Rumors are swirling that a former TaylorMade engineer played a role in designing the Kirkland irons, raising eyebrows over potential intellectual property disputes. When looking at the irons, you’ll notice a stamped ‘Forged’ designation on the hosel. However, skepticism looms over whether any part of the club is genuinely forged—further muddying the waters surrounding these objects of desire.
To help assess how the Kirkland Signature irons stack up, they were put through the wringer at Keele Golf Centre, utilizing premium golf balls and launch monitors for testing. The results? Well, they indicated that the Kirkland irons boasted lower ball speed, shorter carry distance, and different launch characteristics compared to the coveted P790. It was found that these new arrivals lack the speed pocket technology present in the P790, which allows for better performance on low face impacts.
Golfers may find the design less attractive as well, with feedback indicating that the Kirkland irons feature a less appealing profile and a more rounded sole. While they come equipped with True Temper Elevate shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips—making them an attractive budget option—some golfers might feel limited without custom fitting options, impacting adaptability for those with specific gaming needs.
Possible confusion is brewing among consumers. Many are uncertain about the performance of the Kirkland irons compared to the industry benchmark set by the P790. Pro Neil Wain pointed out that differences in feedback and sound between the two models could be minimal, potentially misleading shoppers navigating the complexity of performance.
As this legal battle unfolds and the buzz around Costco’s Kirkland Signature irons continues, golf enthusiasts will surely be keeping a close eye on how this situation develops and whether these budget-friendly options will stand the test of time and performance.
