As temperatures in Tampa are predicted to drop into the 40s on Saturday night, local officials are taking steps to assist those in need. Hillsborough County and Sarasota County are implementing cold weather shelters to provide relief for the homeless and residents without adequate heating.
The cold weather shelters program in Hillsborough County will be activated on Saturday due to the expected drop in temperatures. The National Weather Service has reported that local temperatures may fall to or below 40 degrees with a wind chill factor on Saturday night. This initiative is aimed at helping individuals who lack a safe and warm place to stay.
Four shelters will be available in Hillsborough County for adults only. These locations include:
Sarasota County is also prepared for the cold. The 100 Church located at 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port, will open its doors for shelter starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
In Hillsborough County, shelters will be open for intake from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, unless they reach capacity before then. Sarasota’s shelter will begin accepting guests at 5 p.m.
Officials anticipate high demand for shelter as many people are expected to experience difficulties due to the cold. Residents who need assistance are strongly encouraged to seek out friends or family for a place to stay before relying on the shelters, which have limited capacity.
Transportation options are available for those needing to reach the shelters. In Sarasota County, the Breeze Route 9 is operating normally, with various stops along Tamiami Trail. The Breeze OnDemand service is also available for residents in the North Port area.
Emergency Management officials in Sarasota are cautioning about the importance of keeping pets indoors during the cold weather. Additionally, they recommend that individuals outside overnight should wear multiple layers of clothing to protect against the chill.
As heating systems are utilized more frequently during these cold spells, the Sarasota County Fire Department urges residents to exercise extreme caution. Risks such as fire and carbon monoxide poisoning can increase with improper use of heating devices.
As the cold weather descends upon Tampa and surrounding areas, community resources are stepping up to protect those most vulnerable. Local officials are urging residents to utilize available shelters while also emphasizing the importance of safety and preparedness during this chilly season.
