As the holiday season approaches, a Tampa resident is taking the initiative to bring some Christmas spirit to neighbors affected by recent hurricanes. Jack Guthrie has launched a community effort to collect and distribute Christmas decorations to residents who lost their homes during Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Guthrie, fueled by a desire to support those struggling this holiday season, started collecting unused decorations from neighbors. After posting her request on a local social media platform, she received overwhelming support. “Instead of putting my unused decorations back in the rafters, I thought of creating something that I could give to people who lost everything and bring a little Christmas cheer,” she expressed.
Items being collected include artificial Christmas trees, lights, garlands, ornaments, tree skirts, and other festive décor. Guthrie aims to ensure that everyone impacted can experience some sense of normalcy this Christmas. “I have different-sized trees, so if you’re in a transitional home, you have small trees,” she noted, highlighting her effort to cater to the needs of various families.
The community has responded positively, with many individuals offering items to Guthrie’s cause. “I can’t believe how many I’ve gotten so far. Everybody’s really pitching in and wanting to help out,” she stated. Many of those participating have personal ties to the destruction caused by the hurricanes and understand the importance of maintaining holiday traditions.
Recognizing the emotional toll of the disasters, Guthrie explained, “There are a lot of retirees who lost everything. Just bringing a little bit of something has to make you feel a little better.” Her efforts go beyond just providing decorations; they aim to instill hope and happiness among residents facing difficult times.
Guthrie is organizing what she calls holiday “kits” that will include a tree complete with matching lights and ornaments for affected families. She plans to continue collecting donations through Saturday, December 7, ensuring that as many families as possible can benefit from this initiative.
Distribution of the decorated holiday kits is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, December 8. Guthrie is actively seeking a large open space, such as a community parking lot, to facilitate the giving of these trees and decorations. “If anybody has a business, a parking lot, anywhere where we can hand out the trees, it’s just for a good cause,” she remarked.
In a time when the holiday season can feel overshadowed by loss and devastation, initiatives like Guthrie’s bring a glimmer of hope. By uniting the community through kindness and support, she is ensuring that the spirit of Christmas is not lost for those struggling to rebuild.
