In the heart of sunny Tampa, an intriguing event is set to take place, capturing the rich and intertwined history of Catholic and Jewish communities in the area. On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the Saint Leo University’s Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies (CCJS) will team up with the Tampa Bay History Center to host a special evening titled “History of Catholic-Jewish Relations in Tampa Bay”. This engaging event promises not only insightful discussions but is also completely free to the public!
The lively discussions are scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. and will run until 8 p.m. at the Tampa Bay History Center, conveniently located at 801 Water St., Tampa, FL 33602. Specifically, attendees can find the action happening in the center’s lovely TECO Hall on the second floor. This conversation is part of the well-regarded Florida Conversations lecture series, focusing on the intertwined histories of Tampa’s Catholic and Jewish communities. With the help of a panel of local leaders who boast years of knowledge and personal experience, attendees will be treated to a deep dive into this unique relationship.
The evening will be guided by the welcoming presence of Dr. Matthew Tapie, the director of CCJS and an associate professor of theology at Saint Leo University. The discussion will be skillfully moderated by Dr. Gary Mormino, who holds the title of Frank E. Duckwall Professor of History Emeritus at the University of South Florida. Participants will also hear valuable insights from Rabbi David Maayan, the Maureen and Douglas Cohn Chair in Jewish Thought and assistant director of CCJS, who will contribute additional thoughts during the program.
Following the panelists’ insights, attendees will have the chance to participate in a lively question-and-answer session.
