La Segunda Central Bakery, established in 1915 in Tampa’s historic Ybor City, is renowned for its authentic Cuban bread and pastries. Founded by Juan Moré, a Spanish immigrant who learned the art of baking Cuban bread during his service in the Spanish-American War, the bakery has remained a family-owned enterprise for over a century.
The bakery’s signature Cuban bread is distinguished by a palmetto leaf placed atop each loaf before baking, creating a characteristic split down the middle. This traditional method contributes to the bread’s thin, flaky crust and soft interior. La Segunda produces approximately 18,000 loaves daily, supplying local establishments like the Columbia Restaurant and shipping nationwide.
Beyond bread, La Segunda offers a variety of Cuban pastries, including guava turnovers, quesitos, and coconut pastries, as well as café con leche. The bakery has expanded to multiple locations in Tampa and St. Petersburg, continuing its legacy of quality and tradition.
La Segunda Central Bakery stands as a testament to Tampa’s rich cultural heritage, preserving the flavors and traditions of Cuban baking for generations.
