Miami is buzzing with excitement as one of its most beloved local entrepreneurs, Benjamin León Jr., has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain. At 80 years old, León has left quite a mark in Miami’s healthcare scene, and he’s not done yet!
León’s incredible story began when he immigrated to Miami from Bayamo, Cuba, at just 16 years old, armed with only five dollars. This brave young man embarked on a journey that would see him not only thrive but also bring healthcare innovation to countless lives in his new home.
León came from a family with a strong commitment to healthcare. His father, Benjamín León Sr., helped establish Clínica Cubana in 1964, focusing on delivering care to the local Cuban community. It didn’t stop there—by 1970, father and son were pioneers, founding the Clínica Asociación Cubana, one of the first Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) in the U.S.
As if that wasn’t enough, León was instrumental in lobbying for the state of Florida’s very first HMO license back in 1973. Talk about making an impact!
His company, CAC, became a major player in the healthcare industry, eventually selling to UnitedHealthCare for an astounding $500 million in 1994. But León didn’t stop there—just a couple of years later, in 1996, he founded Leon Medical Centers, specifically aimed at serving Medicare patients. Now, this healthcare empire boasts eight centers across Miami-Dade County and employs over 3,000 individuals.
Today, León Medical Centers serves nearly 39,000 Medicare patients and has garnered accolades, with healthcare plans receiving a five-star rating from CMS for two consecutive years. That’s a testament to the quality of care and innovation that León continues to champion.
León’s contributions to the community extend far beyond healthcare innovation. Recognizing the challenges faced by his employees, he opened Camp León, a dedicated childcare service that supports families during hurricane threats. It’s this kind of forward-thinking that shows his true character.
Philanthropy is another area where León shines. He generously donated $20 million to Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, targeting geriatric research and education. Additionally, he gifted $5 million to create the Benjamin León School of Nursing at Miami Dade College. Not stopping there, he even contributed $10 million to establish CasaCuba, celebrating and promoting Cuban heritage.
León’s influence within the political realm is also noteworthy. Since 2023, he has been a significant donor, supporting Republican campaigns with over $3 million in contributions. It’s clear that he believes in the power of community and political initiatives.
With this nomination, if confirmed, León will succeed Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain. Trump praised León’s dedication to philanthropy and healthcare, emphasizing how his experience can make a difference on an international level.
As if healthcare and philanthropy weren’t enough, León has also dabbled in the world of equestrian sports by owning Besilu Stables and breeding champion horses. This adds yet another layer to an already fascinating life story.
