News Summary

Rhea Law, the President of the University of South Florida (USF), has announced her decision to step down after a remarkable leadership journey. Having been with USF for over 40 years, Law has overseen significant milestones, including the university’s admission to the Association of American Universities and record fundraising achievements. As she prepares to transition to new leadership, Law aims to ensure a smooth handover and continue USF’s mission for future growth.

Rhea Law to Step Down as USF President After Notable Leadership Journey

In the bustling city of Tampa, the University of South Florida (USF) is entering a new chapter as President Rhea Law announces her decision to step down. After some spectacular years at the helm, Law will continue leading the university until a successor is appointed through a thorough national search process.

A Journey Full of Achievements

Law’s impressive journey with USF has spanned over 40 remarkable years. She has worn many hats: student, employee, board member, chair, donor, and volunteer. Her connection to the university is profound, and her commitment has only grown since she initially stepped into the role of interim President in August 2021. Just a few months later, her leadership was cemented when she was appointed the permanent President in March 2022.

Setting and Exceeding Goals

During her tenure, Law set forth bold goals and worked collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students to surpass them. Her pioneering spirit shone brightly as she navigated the university through substantial growth and advancement. USF was invited to join the esteemed Association of American Universities in 2023, a milestone that recognized the institution as the first Florida school to join in nearly 40 years!

National Recognition and Success

Under Law’s stewardship, USF has been consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities in the United States each year according to the U.S. News & World Report. Moreover, the university has proudly held the title of the best value school in Florida for the last two years! Now that’s a major feather in the cap.

Exciting Developments Ahead

In addition to achievements in accolades, significant developments have taken place under Law’s presidency. For instance, in November, it was announced that USF would break ground on a new stadium, which is scheduled for completion in 2027—a thrilling prospect for students and fans alike! Additionally, fundraising efforts under her leadership reached new heights, with a record-breaking $168 million raised from over 54,000 generous donors within a single year.

Record-Breaking Research Funding

The focus on research has also been unprecedented, with USF achieving a record in research funding of $738 million last year. This robust funding supports a variety of projects and significantly boosts the university’s operations.

The Future Looks Bright

Looking ahead, USF plans to launch the College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing this fall, showcasing a commitment to staying at the forefront of evolving fields crucial to society’s future. Law emphasized that creating space for fresh ideas and new leadership is essential to navigate the next phase of growth for USF.

A Smooth Transition for the Next Leader

As she prepares to say goodbye, Law expressed her desire to create a “glide path” for the next President of USF, ensuring that the transition will be seamless and supportive. Will Weatherford, the chair of USF’s Board of Trustees, acknowledged Law’s esteemed leadership and the considerable contributions she made to USF’s success.

Though Law hasn’t disclosed her future plans after stepping down, she is committed to ensuring that USF will actively pursue both state and outside funding for future projects—including an anticipated Environmental and Oceanographic Sciences research facility.

What’s Next?

The university already plans to keep the community informed about the national search process for a new president. As the search unfolds, the USF community can look forward to the next exciting chapter in the university’s storied history.
